Railway track and turnouts

Examination of the technical condition of track, track superstructure elements and connections.

When it is needed

When defects are found or there is a dispute about repairs or a siding's condition.

What we examine

  • Railway track
  • Turnouts
  • Formation and fastening elements

Materials to prepare

  • Track plan and asset passport
  • Repair documents
  • Measurement results
  • Maintenance and inspection records

Sample questions

  • What defects were recorded on the section?
  • Do the location references agree with the documents supplied?
  • What measurable deviations have been established?
  • What causes of the identified damage are technically supported?
  • What additional checks are necessary?

Build a set of questions →

How the work is carried out

  1. Locating the section boundaries
  2. Inspection and agreed measurements
  3. Comparison with documentation

Result

A report locating the defects and presenting measurement results and the limits of established causes.

What affects the conclusions

The infrastructure owner provides access to operating tracks and protective measures.

Frequently asked questions

Do you check industrial sidings?

Yes, after defining the task, asset requirements and safe access conditions.

Can you work only from earlier measurements?

This is possible for a documentary question; the measurements' completeness and origin must be verifiable.

Comparing the same section's condition on different dates

To compare inspections, it is necessary to ensure that measurements concern exactly the same location. Materials identify the track, direction, section boundaries, turnout numbers and stable landmarks. If different designation or distance systems were used, a diagram explains the correspondence between them.

The comparability of the data themselves is then checked: the quantity measured, points and conditions, method and accuracy. A change in the final measure may reflect not only track condition but differences in the measurement programme. Original schedules and a diagram of points are therefore useful, rather than a single overall rating.

Changes between inspections are considered separately

  • Repair work and replaced components.
  • Sections with a restored formation or modified drainage.
  • Changes in operating conditions and known loads.
  • Accident effects and work performed afterwards.
  • Inaccessible points and unchecked parts of the asset.

If the task concerns condition on an event date, a later inspection is considered together with records from that time. Current geometry cannot be applied retrospectively without explanation. The report must make clear the boundaries inspected, the sources for each comparison and the limits of any conclusion about the nature of the change.

Work on operating infrastructure is arranged by the owner under safe access rules. To prepare an enquiry, it is sufficient to provide a diagram, available schedules and a list of disputed sections; independent measurements on operating tracks are not required.
